The Ashley Montagu Institute,
whose goal is to
extend and implement the lifework of its namesake, internationally renowned
anthropologist Ashley Montagu, through education, research, and community
interventions.
Founded in 1997 by Roderic
Gorney, MD, a professor of psychiatry at UCLA and longtime Montagu mentee,
AMI has been supported to date by private donations totaling $35,000. These
sources will be supplemented by larger grants from private foundations
and corporations, as well as contributions from the general public. In
addition, legacies eventually will further increase resources, $1.5M already
having been committed. Finally, these amounts will be swelled by contributions
from the general public.
The Institute will expend
these funds in implementing its programs. An example is its focus
on the unthinking waste that threatens our planet, and more effective means
of inculcating recycling and voluntary simplicity living patterns.
Another example is its exploration of the epidemic levels of mental disorders,
and the power of loving nurturance to forestall the pathology, criminality,
and suffering they cause.
